Crashing Waves

by Kimberley Rance

The waves crash. Salty water wraps around my body.

I’m lost within the surf’s foam.

Fear overcomes me.

My heart is fragmented; it’s in the eye of the storm, the waves typhoon everything

until I’m left with no more than sand.

I used to imagine myself as a mermaid,

riding the waves playfully and

feeling right at home.

I now feel trapped by my human legs and

fear the ocean’s power,

the descent of the breathless dive.

Finally back on the sand,

I watch the waves pound the shore.

I search for a glimpse of the person I used to be.

I find myself reminiscing about rock pools, the sounds of excitement and the greedy seagulls.

I dream of sunny days with calm seas, soaring birds and warm sands,

days when I’m relaxed, happily surrounded by the place that feeds my soul,

where the walls of magnificent sand castles hold my heart within the eyes of their shells.

And I feel like myself again.
